Aiming

Aiming is probably the hardest thing to get used to, so it takes the most practice to get it down fluidly. The trick to aiming is to aim soft. The aiming is sensitive, where if you aim the left stick all the way left, your shot will go way left missing the goal completely and hitting the glass behind it. So if "all the way left" is 100%, then go about 75-80% left to get a shot that will stay inside the goal. Thats the tricky part. When your skating towards the goal, your left stick is controlling your movement and your left stick should be at 100%, but when your ready to shoot, pull back to 75-80% and you should see your shots hitting the goal more. The other factor is your players offensive skill score. If your shooting with Ovechkin with a 94 in offense, then your shots are going to be more accurate, and you may not need aim as softly.

  1. Love your site! A few questions on aiming. What's the learning curve like? Is it really worth it? I have to ask because I'm struggling to get this down in practice mode. I won't be able to do this in a real game before some serious re-learning! Thanks!

  2. It is so worth it! It takes time and practice but you WILL get better. Seriously, your hands and brain need time to coordinate and get used to working together, but one day it will click and you'll start winning. This game is so great because once you get it down, it will feel all the more terrific because all the time you put into it. If you are struggling, dont jump right into online play. These people have had time to practice and you will get frustrated losing all the time. Beside, there are lag issues that you will have to account for as well, so it makes it even harder. Start a Dynasty or BAP mode and grind it out there, where you have a chance. Good luck.

  3. One more thing,

There is definitely a rhythm to shooting. When taking a slap shot, I first press Vision Control to align my shooter (this will improve accuracy), pull back on the shoot stick at the same time im aiming my shot, and then fire it. It doesn't come all that naturally, and its a lot to think about at once, especially while trying to setup your offense. Practice just with the goalie until it becomes natural, and then practice in a 5 on 5 practice mode.

  4. I have a question. When you say to use "75-80%" I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean that instead of holding the stick due west you aim it slightly north/south of due west with the stick against the edge of the circle or do you mean the the stick is not held all the way to the edge of the circle, but rather 75-80% of the way to the outer edge of the circle?
    Thanks, Piner

  5. I mean the stick is not held all the way to the edge of the circle. Here is a quote from producer David Littman's blog talking about the patch update and how the aiming has changed:

"We have fixed the goals from outside shots that people are scoring. We have reduced shot accuracy when on the rush and when turning
quickly, and from far out. You will now have to be more conservative when shooting on the rush. If you aim all the way to the left or right,
your shot will go wide a lot more. Try aiming more towards the middle to hit the net from outside. This fixes the cross goal where you shoot back the other way, and the goal that goes in with the "curve" animation, and a few others. There's a reason NHL players don't shoot from outside on the rush very often. Dumping or trying to set up is a better play unless
    you have an odd-man situation."
